Perinatal Mental Health Group Starts October 7th!
What is Perinatal Mental Health Treatment?
Perinatal mental health treatment encompasses specialized psychological care and therapy provided during pregnancy (prenatal) and up to one year postpartum. It addresses Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs) including postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, and birth trauma.
What is a perinatal mental health group about?
Many parents experience a complex mix of emotions, physical shifts, and mental health challenges. Unlike general therapy, perinatal-focused treatment accounts for the hormonal shifts, sleep deprivation, and identity changes that accompany new parenthood. It is not just about "feeling better"; it is about fostering a healthy parent-child bond and ensuring the long-term wellness of the entire family.
Who is it for?
While transitioning roles affect both parents, this group is specifically for mothers. The group is designed to support new mothers, ranging anywhere from pregnancy to postpartum of 5 years.
What should I expect for a perinatal mental health group?
The group will be in-person with about 10 mothers and 2 providers. The group will consist of a brief check-in, mindfulness, psychoeducation, a group activity (art based), and a check-out. Group members will have the opportunity to reach out for individual support if needed outside of the sessions. To be a part of this group, an individual assessment needs to be completed before the start date.
What topics are covered for the perinatal mental health group?
Postpartum Mental Health Conditions:
Depression, anxiety, bipolar, OCD, psychosis, anxious thoughts, and how to challenge intrusive thoughts.
Mind and body connections:
Body cues and how to listen, body sensations tied to emotions, regulating mind with movement, mindfulness with body.
Identity and Interaction:
Attachment styles birth trauma, becoming a mom and keeping self identity, self-care, values and strengths.
Is this an in-person or virtual group?
Currently this group only meets in person. We are doing creative activities that require in-person attendance. Since there can be barriers as a mom to attend in person, if needed you may bring your child (up to the age of 1). We ask that you only bring one child if necessary. This can be further discussed on an individual basis. If there is interest in a virtual group, this may be considered for future groups.
Where is the group?
This group will be located at the Introspect Mental Health White Bear Lake office.
4801 Highway 61 N Suite 204 White Bear Lake, MN 55110
What day and time is the group?
The group will be on Wednesdays, from 3-5p at the White Bear Lake office. This session will begin on October 7th, and will run for 6 weeks. The group is cyclical so anyone can join at any time, we ask that participants commit to attending all 6 weeks.
